The Crystal Theatre has stood on Main Street since 1949, a cherished gathering place for many years. Like many small cinemas, it closed in the 1960s when television reshaped how people experienced stories, but in the early 1980s, Bob and Kathy Ezra brought it back to life. For 40 years, they kept it alive, independent, and community-powered.
With shifting habits, rising costs, and industry uncertainty, we’re at a familiar crossroads. But the Crystal has always been an underdog. It has weathered the Great Recession, survived COVID, endured Hollywood strikes...and it will weather this direct-to-phone content storm too. To do so, vital upgrades are needed: essential improvements that will allow the theater to expand beyond movies and become a lasting home for film, live performances, youth programs, and civic gatherings, all while keeping the heart of the Crystal intact.
Time is getting Tight!
The Crystal Theatre is at a turning point.
We’ve raised $300,000 — but we must raise $200,000 more to secure its future.
Your support will invest in the following:
Complete essential AV and space upgrades ($280K) to allow for live performances, youth programs, bilingual events, mental health talks, speaker series, school partnerships - and, of course, more great movies.
Sign a long-term lease and build programming $120K)
Purchase the business and all its assets ($100K)
These upgrades are vital
To keep the doors open and create a thriving, inclusive cultural hub for years to come.
The Crystal will remain the movie theater you love, only stronger, more sustainable, and more vibrant.
Every donation is meaningful and has a tangible impact. As a community, we can do this!
Crystal Theatre Alliance (CTA) educates and enriches individuals and communities through diverse and accessible cultural experiences by offering programs in cinema, fostering education and other shared activities in an inclusive and welcoming multi-media community auditorium space.
To preserve the Crystal Theatre as a beloved community anchor while expanding its potential as a multi-use space for film, arts, culture, and civic life. By upgrading the space and broadening its offerings, we envision a dynamic, inclusive venue that serves future generations in more ways than ever before, remaining not just a movie theater, but a vibrant home for connection, creativity, and community.
